Developing your skills

While a good degree - from a top University - will undoubtedly help your applications, you'll also need to show employers that you have the skills they need.

Skills programmes and workshops

We have a number of programmes and workshops and that provide you with opportunities to develop your skills and experience for your career. The programmes are generally work-based or experiential, and enable you to build professional networks within particular industries. Programmes include:

Our skills sessions and workshops run throughout the year and cover specific job-seeking skills (e.g. CV and application writing and interview techniques) as well as more general skills (e.g. team building and commercial awareness). For a list of the types of sessions available visit Application and interview skills sessions. You can also search CareerConnect for specific events.

Make the most of your time

After your work experience, it's useful to spend some time thinking about what you've got out of it.  You may well be encouraged by the employer to offer your feedback.

  • What skills have I used?
  • What motivated or demotivated me about the work?
  • Which bits did I find interesting or boring?
  • Did the organisation and work fit with my values?
  • Did I enjoy the work?
  • What was the culture of the organisation like?
  • How would I have changed the experience to make it just right for me?
  • What does this mean for my future career choices?
