Practical Tips for becoming a Trainee Solicitor (11:15 – 12:00)

This session will be led by Sarah Pooley from the University of Law. Sarah is herself an experienced solicitor who now heads the University of Law’s Guildford centre. In this session she will take you through the process of qualification, the skills needed and the post graduate study required. She will also include an update on the forthcoming changes to the solicitors’ qualification route that the S.R.A. announced earlier this year and which are planned to start to take effect in September 2020.

Practical Tips for becoming a Pupil Barrister (12:15 – 13:00)

Obtaining pupillage is harder than ever. Every year, another cohort of highly qualified applicants enrols on the BPTC (Bar Professional Training Course) and applies for an ever-shrinking number of pupillages. On top of that, the pupillage application process remains shrouded in mystery with horror stories of bizarre sifting systems and terrifying interview tactics whispered around the country.

Matthew Parker – a distinguished Barrister from 3 Verulam Buildings (one of London’s strongest commercial litigation chambers) – along with current Pupils, will share their insight, experience and tips about the process for applying for Pupillage. If you are wondering what a barrister does, considering whether to pursue a career at the Bar, or know that this is definitely the career path for you – then come along! Don’t miss this fantastic session.

Human Rights Law (13:15 – 14:00)

This session will take the form of a panel. An Oxford Human Rights Hub representative will be joined by practising lawyers from local law firm Turpin and Miller, and from the charity Just for Kids Law, who will talk about their work in the area of human rights law.
