Are you considering roles in academia? The range of research and teaching roles in higher education is large, and you'll come across a variety of terminology. In this session we will try to de-mystify the options, let you know more about the most commonly found early career academic roles. We'll also look at how to put together a tailored and compelling CV and cover letter or supporting statement for such opportunities and touch on other application materials that you might need. 

Doing Research Outside Academia

This session looks at the kind of jobs available beyond academia where keen researchers might apply their skill set. We will also hear from speakers who have entered roles with a considerable research element following Bachelor, Masters and PhD-level study.

Banking and Investment is a popular sector for Oxford students, but can sometimes seem complicated and difficult to navigate. In this session we hope to de-mystify the sector through a discussion about a number of topics including an overview of the types of firms that exist, how they recruit, how to find work experience and other useful resources that can help build your knowledge about the sector.

 Management Consultancy: Offer Holders Panel

Join us for this virtual panel discussion whether you are merely curious to learn more about management consultancy, or if you are already thinking of applying in the year ahead and want to learn what you can do this summer to help you be more fully prepared when applications open in August and September. This panel will feature Oxford finalists who have secured a job offer this year in the competitive world of management consulting. Our 'offer holders' will share their thoughts and experiences to illustrate what they believe helped them to prepare and succeed in this ever popular industry sector and share their best advice to help you be competitive in your own applications.   

 Civil Service and Public Sector: Offer Holders Panel

If you are planning to apply for a public sector role in the year ahead, this session is for you. The careers across the public sector are extremely diverse; from the Civil Service Fast Stream (FS) through dedicated graduate entry programmes within Local Government, NHS, social services, policing and direct entry routes into individual government departments, regulators and agencies. This session is intended to help you understand how best to use your summer and plan ahead to be ready when it comes to applying. Our panel will feature students and alumni who have applied successfully this year, and therefore are well placed to outline what to expect and share the tips, tactics and hard work that they think helped them to successfully negotiate the recruitment hurdles.

Introduction to Data Science and Technology (for all disciplines)

Thinking of a career in the tech sector or in data science but did not study computer science? This session will cover the basics: an overview of the sector; the types of role and organisations available; ways to gain experience at Oxford and beyond; typical entry points; and further resources to explore more.

Insight into Data Careers

This three-part programme will provide attendees with a comprehensive overview of the data careers landscape, insights into what it's really like to work in this area, and practical tips and advice on how to prepare for and pursue a career in data.

Barristers' Training: When to Apply for Pupillages, Mini-pupillages and Scholarships

Find out when and how to apply for pupillage (the ‘graduate job’ part of becoming a barrister) and mini-pupillage (the 2-5 days’ work experience offered by sets of chambers), as well as the for the £6m worth of scholarships offered by the four Inns of Court to help you find your training.

If you have been considering a career in law but are not sure where to start then this event is for you. The main focus will be on understanding the roles of a barrister and a solicitor, how to become qualified and how to get started.

Are you deciding which route to take on your journey to qualifying as a solicitor? This event will provide an overview of what you need to consider.

Find out about the roles available in the publishing sector (there’s more to publishing than editorial), the skills needed, and how to get a job in this industry (hint: graduate schemes are not the most common route in).

Introduction to Teaching

 Online  Monday 12 June, 13:00-14:00

Thinking about a career teaching in schools? There are many possible routes into teaching and ways to try it out before you take the leap. This session offers an overview of the basics: an overview of teacher training options including school- and university-led options, Teach First and others; how to gain relevant experience; and a realistic view of the sector and life as a teacher.
