Sector insight events in Michaelmas

Oxford careers advisers have planned a series of introductory events throughout Michaelmas term to help you get insights into popular employability sectors. From tech, banking, law, and management consultancy, to the creative industries, PR and beyond, you can find out what you can now and in the coming months to get a head start in your career.

Introduction to Data Science & Technology (all disciplines)

Week 0: Friday, 8 October 2021. 13:00-14:00

Thinking of a career in the tech sector or in data science but did not study computer science? This session will cover the basics: an overview of the sector; the types of role and organisations available; ways to gain experience at Oxford and beyond; typical entry points; and further resources to explore more.

Introduction to Careers in Banking & Investment

Week 1: Monday, 11 October 2021. 12:00-13:30

Thinking about a career in Banking or Investment but not sure how it all works, whether it would suit you, what roles are available, or how to get a job in this industry? We will be covering all the basics at this introductory session to help you figure out your next steps and if it’s right for you.

Introduction to Law

Week 1: Monday, 11 October 2021. 13:00-14:00

The legal sector is large and full of variety so for this session the main focus will be on understanding the roles of a barrister and a solicitor, how to become qualified and how to get started. This session is for beginners, so it will assume no prior knowledge. 

Introduction to Management Consultancy

Week 1: Monday, 11 October 2021. 14:00-15:00

This session, led by Jonathan Black, the Director of the Careers Service and a management consultant for six years with Booz Allen Hamilton in London and San Francisco, will describe the sector, the type of work you would do as a consultant, the types of organisation you could consider, and how to apply and enter the sector.

Introduction to the Creative Industries

Week 2: Monday, 18 October 2021. 13:30-14:30

This session will give you a brief introduction to the sector and tips on how to find out more about the industries you are interested in, find jobs, and networking opportunities.

Introduction to Further Study

Week 2: Thursday, 21 October 2021. 13:30-14:30

Whether you are thinking about Masters courses or PhDs, in the UK or elsewhere, this session offers an overview of the basics: the options that are available, how to choose institutions and courses, how the application process works and how funding works.

Introduction to PR and Advertising

Week 4: Monday, 1 November 2021. 12:00-13:00

Thinking about a career in PR or advertising but not sure what roles are in this sector and what they do? Wondering how you can get experience to getting a job in this industry? This session will answer your questions.

Introduction to Publishing

Week 4: Wednesday, 3 November 2021. 11:00-12:00

Thinking about a career in publishing but not sure how it all works? Sign up to this event to find out about the roles available (there’s more to publishing than editorial), the skills needed, and how to get a job in this industry (hint: graduate schemes are not the most common route in)  

Introduction to Journalism

Week 4: Friday, 5 November 2021. 14:00-15:00

This introductory session requires no prior knowledge and aims to provide you with a overview of the sector and tips on how to understand the different career options in journalism.

Introduction to Teaching

Week 5: Tuesday, 9 November 2021. 12:00-13:00

This session offers an an overview teacher training options including school- and university-led options, Teach First and others; how to gain relevant experience; and a realistic view of the sector and life as a teacher.

Introduction to Careers in International Development

Week 5: Thursday, 11 November 2021. 13:15-14:15

In this session, we will be discussing how the International Development is structured, the different types of roles available, and how to find jobs and work experience opportunities.
