Academia or Beyond? Keeping your options open

When: Tuesday 13 November, 09:00 – 12:30
Where: The Careers Service, 56 Banbury Road, Oxford

Are you considering a career change? Wondering if you are employable and/or what you might be giving up?

In this workshop we will explore your understanding of the pros and cons of staying in academic research, whether and how you prepare to move to another sector (or combine aspects of academia with another role) and what you feel you might be risking in making this move.

Attend the session to become familiar with an evidence-informed framework for assessing a potential career move, think about how to use this in your current roles, and develop some practical strategies to assist decision-making.

Register for the workshop here.

“Smart people work everywhere”: using your research skills outside academia

When: Wednesday 14 November, 16:30 – 18:30
Where:  St Cross College lecture theatre, 61 St Giles, Oxford

Research degrees: what are they good for? Can you use the skills you have acquired during your DPhil in a career outside academia – and why would you want to?

Carole Souter, Master of St Cross College and ex CEO National Heritage Memorial Fund and Heritage Lottery Fund, invites you, whatever your age/stage as a student or postdoc, to join a stimulating panel to hear how Humanities scholars have built rewarding working lives using their research skills, plus tips on entry and progression.

You will then have a full hour to talk over drinks with other researchers, the panel members plus members of the Careers Service and Divisional researcher development teams. This is a great opportunity to explore ideas you’ve been nurturing and to identify support available.
