One-to-One Advice

Research staff and DPhil students often need specific advice. As such we have a dedicated Careers Adviser, Dr Claire Conway, who specialises in providing careers support to Oxford University researchers at The Careers Service, JR hospital, Old Road Campus and the science area.To book an appointment of up to one hour with Claire, please contact us at reception@careers.ox.ac.uk or phone us on 01865 274646.

Events for Research Staff

There is a selection of workshops and events designed especially for research staff, where you can share your views and insights with other researchers.  Some are organised in conjunction with the Oxford Learning Institute, but you can log into CareerConnect to see all times and booking details.

To be kept up to date with career and professional development activities you can register for the research staff mailing list.  Departmental Administrators, and researchers, are also welcome to contact the Careers Service to arrange sessions within their department/research group (contact the Careers Adviser for Researchers: Dr Claire Conway).

WELCOME EVENT FOR NEW RESEARCH STAFF

This seminar is designed for researchers within their first year or so at the University. The Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research will open the seminar welcoming new researchers to the University. This interactive and informal seminar will provide you with an opportunity to ask questions arising from your initial experience of Oxford, and also give you an introduction to the career and professional development opportunities available for research staff at the University.

TO PHD OR NOT TO PHD? A CAREER PATHWAYS WORKSHOP FOR RESEARCH ASSISTANTS

Are you a research assistant wondering where to go next in your career?  Not sure what to do when your contract ends or if a PhD is for you?  Then come to our new workshop just for Research Assistants!  Meet other Research Assistants and we will explore academic career pathways as well as how to start thinking about what other career options you may have.

TOO LATE TO CHANGE DIRECTION? A CAREER CHANGE WORKSHOP FOR RESEARCH STAFF

Been a researcher for a while?  Considering a change but unsure what you have to offer to the outside world or if leaving academic research is indeed the right move?  Then this workshop is for you.  The aim is to enable research staff to begin exploring the possibility of changing career in a structured and supportive environment.

This workshop has been designed specifically for University Research Staff at all levels and at any stage in their career, who want to step back and spend a few productive hours focusing on identifying their ideal job and future possible career paths within, or outside of, academia. An interactive mix of short individual exercises and small informal group discussions will help you to build a clearer picture of the key factors relating to your career and personal circumstances and to explore career pathways.

Events that can be attended by both Research Staff and DPhil students are listed below.  In addition, regular science career seminars take place at the JR hospital site (WIMM building) on Friday lunchtimes and starting soon in the science area (Biochemistry) on Wednesday lunchtimes which include speakers who have followed academic careers and former researchers who have transitioned to a variety of careers beyond academia. CAREERS IN FINANCE FOR RESEARCHERS

Are you considering a career in finance and unsure of the career options in this sector? Then come and hear about a range of roles available in a variety of companies: Deutsche Bank, Winton Capital, Goldman Sachs Bank and Barclays Investment Bank. Former researchers now working for these organisations will speak about their transition from academia to finance, followed by questions and answers and informal networking over drinks.

Events for DPhil Students

A series of workshops ‘Four Steps to Career Success’ specifically for DPhil students are listed below.

step 1: Career Planning Workshop

This intensive workshop is specifically for doctoral students, and will focus on enabling you to clarify your career ideas through a mix of individual and informal small group exercises. The workshop will cover reviewing your career, factors in career decision making, identifying transferable skills, career motivations and interests and identifying career options. The workshop is relevant for those who are considering a non-academic career or are undecided.

step 2: networking skills

Learn how to develop your professional networks to learn about careers and find jobs.  This workshop will cover how to make contacts, how to approach people, what to say, how to follow up and will include tips for shy networkers.

Step 3: CVs, Applications and Cover Letters Workshop

This intensive workshop is specifically for doctoral students, and will focus on job search techniques as well as how to produce effective CVs, applications and cover letters. The workshop will utilise a mix of individual and informal small group exercises and is most relevant for those who are considering a non-academic career but many of the skills will gained can be applied to academic applications.

step 4: Interview Skills Workshop

This intensive workshop is specifically for doctoral students, and will focus on understanding interview processes, effective preparation for interviews and tackling difficult interview questions. The workshop will utilise a mix of individual and informal small group exercises and is relevant for those who are considering a non-academic career but many of the skills will gained can be applied to academic applications.
