This session offers practical advice and information on the range of options open to you, timing, how the application process works and the funding sources available.

Whether to purely deepen your interest in a subject, to pursue an academic career, or gain skills and experience before entering employment, there are many reasons you may want to earn a doctorate degree. This session will focus on helping you explore your motivations for doing a PhD, and assist you in deciding whether it is the right next step for you. We will briefly explore how to select degree programmes and institutions and provide an overview of application processes and identifying funding options.

The diverse range of courses and institutions, the requirements of the application process and the need to thoroughly research funding options mean that you should ideally start your investigations more than a year ahead. This is a practical session, covering course and institution choice, the application process, standardised tests and funding, and it aims to help you make a start.
