Promentor Programme Experience: 1st Year Chemistry Student

The Promentor Programme: An Alumni Mentoring Programme fostered a robust, tight-knit network of students and mentors. It provided stability at a time of significant change when starting University. Career development is an area that lies in the back of our minds, even as 1st years - the Programme ensures that it is taken care of early on. I have greater clarity and direction for my future whilst having broadened my horizons to areas I might not have discovered before. I wholeheartedly recommend the Programme for those who are sure of their career and those who are not.

Key benefits of the Promentor Programme

I had a niche base and varied career interests in the Programme. The Programme manager reached out to two new mentors so that I could receive tailored advice. The mentors read the same degree as mine, chemistry - this massively helped me, as they were able to provide bespoke advice on the transition from my course. The manager even reached out to a boutique firm I mentioned during my application, which was a great surprise.

The team hosted a celebration evening where we could meet fellow mentees and mentors - along with a delicious food selection.

Finally, the Programme set up a LinkedIn group to extend our network past the three mentors we had, furthering our development.

Advice for future mentees

An open mind is critical at this stage of your life, as ideas constantly evolve. The Programme has depth and breadth - it will provide essential mentoring to your career choice and the opportunity to discover new fields. Communication is vital to the Programme's staff and mentors - efficient and clear messages will improve your experience of the Programme. Finally, prepare to be excited - a world of possibilities awaits you.
