Are you studying law at Oxford but conflicted about using your law degree to become a solicitor or barrister? Have you been put off by rumours of long hours and lack of work/life balance? Are you being encouraged by your friends and family to be lawyer but wondering whether it is actually the right choice for you? Perhaps you are a non-law student who likes the idea of law but wants to know more.
If any of this resonates with you, then join this online session. Run by our careers advisers with a special interest in law, we will look at the pros and cons of becoming a lawyer, how competitive it really is and then the alternative careers you can go into with a law or non-law degree, with a few case studies. We'll also investigate ways you can gain some experience in alternative sectors as well as using the transferable skills you are developing on your Oxford degree to impress employers.
Tuesday 30/04/2024, 12:00 - 13:00 Online
The legal sector is large and full of variety so for this session the main focus will be on understanding the roles of a barrister and a solicitor, how to become qualified and how to get started. This session is for beginners, so it will assume no prior knowledge! There will be opportunities to ask questions.
Tuesday 28/05/2024, 13:00 - 14:00 Online
Careers advisers are often asked by students for advice on how they can differentiate one law firm from another when they all sound the same on paper. It's all about the research but researching law firms can be a daunting task. Only looking at the "headlines” on a firm’s website can make them appear somewhat similar, which is why deeper research is needed to get behind those headlines to discover more and to build a clear picture of a firm.
This session will help you to carry out in depth research and submit applications and interview answers that are tailored to particular firms. By the end of the session you will have tools to help you differentiate between firms.
