“Is it 8th week already?” I hear from students, your tutors, and my colleagues – although you (and they) may also be thinking, “At last! It’s been a long term.” But with Michaelmas, even though the nights are long and cold, we have festivals of lights to enjoy and see us through the shortest days of the year.
The winter vac is typically punctuated with catching up with reading lists, those example papers and essays not quite finished yet, perhaps some down time with old friends from back home and new friends from Oxford, or just time to relax with family or time alone.
Somewhere in there, there could come a moment when you, or a family member, wonders about what you’re going to do after you graduate and leave Oxford. You may have some ideas of your own already, and family will definitely have some ideas for you... all of which could be a useful start. For impartial help, though, there’s your very own your Careers Service. Here are some ways in which we can support you in your career:
- Career Weaver could help you to define your transferable skills, values and interests which you could use to find the industries and jobs that you’d like.
- The 2024 Oxford Guide to Careers is full of advice, of how-tos, and notes from alumni on what they’ve done with their degree since leaving.
- You could consider signing up to an Introduction to…' session or reading some of the many briefings on the Careers Service website to learn about industries.
- And when you’re ready to start, check out the job search and application advice and ways to polish up your CV.
- You could book a 1:1 with a careers adviser – we’re open through the vacation (except for the University fixed closure dates) and in term time we offer over 300 appointments available every week.
- The Careers Service Summer Internship Programme will open in January, with hundreds of internships exclusive to Oxford students.
- You might consider getting real-world client experience on the Oxford Strategy Consultancy programme.
- Set up some searches on CareerConnect – Oxford’s exclusive jobs board.
- And if, like many Oxford students, you want to continue your studies, now’s the time to polish up your applications and apply for further study.
However little or much you do, have a restful and relaxing break – and we look forward to seeing you in 2024.

This winter vacation, the Careers Service is closed on the following dates:
- all day 14 December 2023
- between 21 December 2023 and 1 January 2024, inclusive.
We're otherwise open as usual!
