Speakers announced for the panel discussion on How to Build a Career in Sustainability

What do future careers in sustainability look like and what skills and/or qualifications do future graduates need to tackle climate change, to meet sustainable development goals in business, to build robust policies for a sustainable future?

Academics and industry experts will join a panel discussion on these topics, hosted by the Oxford Careers Service, to equip graduates to navigate a new generation of sustainability jobs and opportunities across this hugely growing sector. Panellists

Speakers representing three key areas – academic, commercial and third sector will be joining this panel discussion chaired by the University of Oxford Careers Service Director, Jonathan Black.

Dr Laurence Wainwright

Smith School Departmental Lecturer and Course Director, MSc Sustainability, Enterprise and the Environment

Originally trained as an accountant, Laurence’s educational background is varied and he holds degrees in subject areas including management, environmental science, and education - with a PhD in business administration specialising in corporate sustainability.

Dr Emma Keller

Head of Sustainability at Nestle UK & Ireland

Emma holds a PhD in sustainability (Imperial UG & Masters, Surrey doctorate) and has over 10 years' experience across industry (Unilever), the not-for-profit sector (WWF) and academia.

Jake Backus

Managing Director of Empathy Sustainability

Previously Customer Sustainability Director for Coca-Cola Europe, lectured on Plastics & Ocean Plastics, Sustainability Communication & Behaviour Change, Trustee of Cyclox, Chair of Trustees for a charity in Cornwall, Head of Sustainability for an Oxford printer (Seacourt) which is the highest ranking B Corp printer or media company in the world and in the top 5% of all B Corps in the Environment category globally, and the only company with 4 Queens Awards for Sustainable Development, and which won the EU Commission's EMAS most sustainable SME in Europe in 2017.

Informal networking

Opportunities to learn more about relevant MSc courses (potential further study in these areas) at Oxford will be included after the talk in an informal networking space along with Oxford student societies (Oxford Sustainable Business & Entrepreneurship Society and the Oxford Climate Society) and the University’s Sustainability team.
